Reasons to Buy Direct

Did you know you can buy books directly from me rather than from a retailer? You did? Excellent!

But why should I, you ask?

An excellent question. Let me give you a few reasons.

First, you will better support the author.

You do want to do that, right? squinty look

By selling direct, the author isn’t dependent on the whims of retailers. One retailer is famous for randomly shutting down author accounts. Obviously, that won’t happen at an author’s own store. The extra security for the author means they can write the books you love without worrying about their own future.

By selling direct, the author has more control over distribution and products, gets substantially greater royalties, AND gets paid faster. Again, more security for the author means more books for you.

And when you buy direct, you give the author encouragement to keep writing. Which means more books for you…

But I like a good deal, you say.

Great! Buy direct. Authors frequently offer discounts, coupons, sales, and/or bundles. You get a good deal, and the author still gets the benefits I already mentioned. In my store, you automatically get a discount when you buy more than one book. Every time. My prices are never higher than the retailers, and with the multi-book discount, a bundle, or the occasional coupon, sometimes my prices are lower. I can afford to do that for you because I get higher royalties. Win for everyone! (Or if you’re looking for a zero price, ask your local library to order the book.)

Lower prices aren’t enough of a perk?

How about exclusive content? Signed copies? Merchandise? Or how about early access to the newest book? With the exception of merchandise (feel free to suggest things you’d like in the future), all of those perks are available at my store. Yeah, you’ve been missing out! I have exclusive bundles as well as entirely exclusive content like sheet music and ring tones for the songs in my Heroes series. It’s also the only place you can get the bonus correspondence without buying the omnibus. And yes, you can get signed print copies or early release ebooks. So. Much. Fun!

Still want more perks? Cool, can do.

How about the ability to download Kindle AND epub files so you can read on any device? Or no DRM so you can transfer your book to your new ereader without buying it again? Best yet, you own the book forever, unlike leasing it from a retailer. (Yes, it’s true. Read the retailer’s TOS. If you drop your account— or don’t update your credit card, sometimes— you lose all the books you have on that account.) If you buy direct, the book stays with YOU.

Okay, okay, so you’re convinced that buying direct is a good idea.

But it’s not safe and is too hard, right?

Wrong! It’s just as safe and easy as buying at your favorite retailer. I use Bookfunnel to deliver my books, which has excellent customer service and will walk you through the whole download process if you get lost— regardless of your device. And you can use a credit card or Paypal with total security. And I don’t sell your information to other people.

So, convinced yet, or have I missed a concern of yours?

If I didn’t cover your questions, please comment and tell me what’s still on your mind.

Marty C. Lee told stories for most of her life, but never took them seriously until her daughter asked her to write the first in the Unexpected Heroes series. Between writing and spending time with her family, she reads, embroiders, and gardens. Her characters take over her brain on a regular basis. If you catch her muttering to thin air, she's probably arguing with one of her characters. She has learned to keep a notebook by her bed to jot down ideas so she can go to sleep and deal with them in the morning.
